About FreeHeadset.org
In December 2003, while driving home, my wife and I witnessed a horrible accident. A man, holding his cell phone while driving, ran through a red light and smashed into the vehicle in front of us..
After helping at the scene for 20 minutes (carefully trying to free a small child from inside the wreckage), emergency crews arrived on scene and Life Flight raced to the ER.
We later learned that both drivers were seriously injured. Tragically, a female passenger had died, but her daughter (the young girl) survived.
This accident troubled me for weeks.. The panic, the screaming are something I will never be able to forget..
I realize traffic accidents happen, but I believe there was a good chance this one could have been avoided.. with a simple $5 headset, two hands on the wheel and a little extra public awareness; lives will be saved.
Like so many others, I had avoided purchasing the optional $30+ hands-free headset each time I bought a new cell phone, but now it finally occurred to me; there are millions of people out there driving around without these headsets. These types of accidents can happen every day.. Something had to be done..
After hundreds of phone calls and emails, I was able to negotiate special arrangements with manufacturers to get headsets in bulk, and in January 2004 we launched FreeHeadset.org!
Orders started trickling in but most people remained skeptical of our offer. Some people even assumed that we were a scam without even attempting to learn more!
Luckily, a few months into the program we received a call from the New York Times. Wow!! The New York Times wanted to run a story on our program!
A few weeks later, the story ran and we received a ton of orders, literally truck-loads. The following years saw similiar media highlights and even some legistlation requiing the use of headsets (a huge win for all of us).
Today, several years and 300,000+ orders later, we're still shipping thousands of headsets each month!
I would personally like to thank the media organizations who have helped spread the word about our program. A special thanks to CBS, NBC, The New York Times, MSNBC and Yahoo Tech for their extra efforts to spread the word about our program.
